What is Menopause?

The menopause term comes from the Greek. Mênos = month and pausis = suspension.

Menopause, an “obligatory” passage in the life of a woman, is associated with the complete ceasing of menstruation and fertility. For certain women, this stage of the life is carefully carried out, without marked discomforts. But for the majority of them, many unpleasantness appear and disturb daily’s life quality.

What does occur exactly during menopause?

At physiological level, the ovaries stop secreting oestrogens and progesterone. In presence of this hormonal disturbance, the oestrogens precursors secreted by the adrenal glands (androgens) will be converted into oestrogens (process named aromatization) by peripheral tissues (liver, adipose mass and muscles).

Thus, cells requiring oestrogens to realize their functions will continue to be supplied, but, in a less constant way. During this transition period, important fluctuations of the hormonal levels will be observed, which will be associated to physical, psychological and emotive undesirable effects.

Menopause very often begins at the beginning of the forty. It appears with irregular menstrual cycles, followed possibly with amenorrhoea. It can spread out over several years, and even during ten years. A woman will be in post-menopausal state after 12 consecutive months without menstruation. For majority of women, the menopause is confirmed between 45 and 55 years.
